At ang higit sa lahat, "Just be your Self, Enjoy Music.”
Did You Know...
that Borromeo Lou was the Philippine “King of Jazz?”
In 1921, a Cebuano named Luis Borromeo returned from America and Canada as Borromeo Lou. It was he who brought “American-style stage entertainment” to the country. He redefined the traditional vod-a-vil (or bodabil) by integrating “Classic-Jazz Music” in shows. “Borromeo himself became a jazz bandleader, and became known as the Philippine “King of Jazz,” the title then given to the famous Paul Whiteman in America.

Yes. My father and mother sings. And sister sing well, too.
Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?
Ms. Donna Cruz, because I saw something in her that I don’t see in other artists. I learned many things from her. From her, I learned that I must strive to reach something I dream for. Sometimes when I am down and it feels like I’m about to give up…I think of her and tell myself that if she can do it, I might just possible can do it, too.
What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?
When I got the chance to sing with my Idol, Ms. Donna Cruz.

KATRINA MANZANO
My life is full of melody and harmony. When I was born on the 29th of September by the year of 1993 here in Makati, that was the start of my vocalization as a new born crying baby.
Most of you may not know me as Ana Katrina Manzano. Yes, that's my real full name and you guys knew me as Kitkat, just like the sweet chocolate's name.
Not like those normal kids who likes watching cartoons, to be honest, ever since I was like 2 or 3 years old I love watching music channels. I used to go in front of the television and copy them singing. I started playing instruments when I was 6. We had a grand piano way back that year and I learned how to play it by reading the notes in the song book. My family doesn't even have a background in music. I don't even know how I got this but I know, this is a special lifetime gift from heaven.
I followed my heart. I didn't stop there. I learned how to play the xylophone, cymbals, bass drum, quinto, quadro, snare by joining the drum and lyre band when I was in elementary and graduated as the lyrist of the year. I even entered choral. I tried performing using minus 1 cassette tapes way back then even though cd's are more practical. I learned to play guitar when I was 10. In high school, I had a band and joined in the battle of the bands twice but unfortunately we never won. I thought band was not for me. That time I was the bassist.
I changed my career from band to performing in theater. I auditioned to AGHAM Theatre Company and became one of them by the year 2008, I was 15. I have undergone workshops in dancing, singing and acting. We perform music plays. My love for music never left me. I stopped performing and focused on my studies because I was a graduating student.
In 2012, I stopped schooling and changed course. From tourism management in ceu to fashion photography in fashion institute of the philippines that time, I auditioned in a Hiphop group and God is good, I passed. I entered Hiphop and Rnb and still with Turf Entertainment until now. I performed already in different bars around metro manila, out of town tours, big stages like octoberfest pasig branch, quezon city circle and world trade center. I've met a lot of people in the music industry like my charity group. Music was our chain.
Beside from Hiphop and Rnb I also have an alternative band named Ako Sikat that was formed in 2014 but I rested for one year in my music career because I had a special gift from heaven, my beautiful princess, Kassie Faith.
A month after I gave birth, I started working as marketing manager and got back in my music career.
December 3, 2015 I was so blessed that when my charity group was featured in GMA motorcycle diaries for documentary purposes, my song "Tara Na" also got featured. Lately, my band is now more on acoustic and we perform covers of opm songs and an original song that I wrote with my cousin Patricia Guardacasa entitled, Ba't Di Mo Na Lang Sinabi. A song for the person you have loved and just left you without even saying that he's letting you go.
Music is my first love. Maybe, it's true that first love never dies. Music is my witness in all that I've gone through. My ups and downs, my failures and achievements, music's my best friend. I am thankful that I was blessed from above with this talent and passion for music.
You might bumped me around the metro.
I am a mother. I am the president of a charity group named FUNCHUM. I am the vocalist of Ako Sikat Band (Hindi ako sikat, ako si Kat!). I am the Road Manager of Kalyo Band. I am the admin/ photographer/ editor/ organizer/ host of Yum Yum Production.
I am an OPM Indie Artist. I support Indie. I support OPM.

To all musicians, music is our story. As we share them, we inspire them.

What’s your stage name?
Iwa Motors
When did you know you are inclined to music?
I started singing when I was in Grade 3. I joined singing contests and never won. So I decided to play the guitar at the age of 13 and played the drums eventually. My first guitar was a classical nylon string guitar. It was my mom’s. She taught me my first song: It was Diana by Paul Anka. When I got bored, I switched in playing drums. My first drum kit was sadly, pillows.
Who helped you achieve learning your instrument of interest or who is your vocal coach? Who was your first teacher? Other teachers?
I was enrolled by Ryan Cayabyab’s The Music Studio. My teacher was Annie Quintos of the Company.
Is your family musical?
My mom plays the guitar and a little bit of piano. My dad is a videoke addict.
Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?
My first musical heroes were Eraserheads, Weezer, Metallica, and Nirvana.
What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?
I’ll never forget the first time we won in a battle of the bands when I was in high school. That’s my most cherished memory.
Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones?
Back then in high school, I was saving money to buy tapes every Friday. Up to now, I still have the album tapes of Eraserheads, Rivermaya, Teeth, Nirvana, Sepultura, Metallica, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, The Beach Boys, Alamid, Yano, Bush, and Stone Temple Pilots.
What was you first original composition? What was it all about, lyrical message/content?
My first composition was titled “Ferris wheel”. It’s about; you guessed it right, a broken heart.
Have you been in competitions? Himig handog? Philpop? Or any other? Any prizes?
Tanya Markova is planning to join on the next one!
Do you perform in public? Describe those occasions? Concerts, radio, TV guestings?
Every musician’s dream is performing in a stage. We play anywhere, anytime! 17. How do you handle mistakes during a performance? Just letting it go and taking a note of it for improvement on the next performance.
Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?
During my first time, yes of course. I conquered fear when I started with Tanya Markova. Now, it’s the audience who gets nervous.
What advice would you give to beginners or to those who wish to follow you music goals? To fellow indie artists?
Always be happy when performing. Play form the heart. Treat every performance as your last and always give your best shot. Lastly, be true to yourself.

How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends, children, job?
I think it’s just time management. Setting a goal and planning ahead of time saves you time and worries.

sqweed
"Resonating their souls through music and using it as their voice”.
Sqweed is a four-piece band with different influences fused together, From pop to hip-hop, blues to jazz, alternative to metal. The result was unsettling at first, until they found a way to tame their discord. They are exploring various sounds and called their music genre Schizodisco/Experimental Rock. Using upbeat tempos, aggressive heavy riffs and groovy basslines with dulcet melodies. Formed at the last quarter of 2014, they immediately started to write their own materials. The band’s sound is heavily influenced by Muse and At the Drive In.

JELO TIQUIA
What’s your full name and your stage name?
My name is Jelo Tiquia and I’m an indie artist.
Birthday and your birthplace?
I was born on the 17th of January, 1984 at UST Hospital, Sampaloc Manila.
When did you know you are inclined to music?
I would like to believe that my journey with music started when I was just very little and was not even able to speak fluently yet. Nagulat dad ko kasi I pressed the record button and sang a line from one of the songs.
When did you start playing? Which instruments do you play? What was the first tune(s) you learned?
I started singing when I was just 7 years old, at choir. I started playing the guitar when I was in 2nd year highschool. Started writing my own music in 1st year college.
Describe your first instrument. Other instruments.
The guitar is the only instrument that I know how to play.
Who helped you achieve learning your instrument of interest or who is your vocal coach? Who was your first teacher? Other teachers?
My first mentor was my cousin, Kuya Kolri Mapua. He introduced me to 90s Grunge, Rock and Alternative. When I got into a band (my former band Number Our Days), I was mentored by Avalon Beyond’s lead guitarist, Benjo Juni. I did not have any formal guitar and vocal mentoring though.
Is your family musical?
I was told that my grandparents know how to play different instruments during their youth. I think it comes primarily from my mom’s side of the family.

Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?
I’ve got a few influences on my list: Chris Carrabba of Dashborad Confessional, Jason Wade of Lifehouse, J.R. Richards of Dishwalla. I admire their taste for music and their song writing skills.
What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?
My first band experience was way back year 2001. I can still remember the adrenaline during my first gig experience at a school event.
Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones?
Dashboard Confessional, Lifehouse, Dishwalla, Acceptance, Blink 182, Skindred, John Legend, John Denver, Spiral Staircase, Eminem, Drake, Orange and Lemons, Urbandub, to name a few. (Yes I listen to all kinds and type of genre!)
What was you first original composition? What was it all about, lyrical message/content?
My first song was a Tagalog song entitled “Mag-aabang”. It was basically a “crush song” and how to wait patiently for the right moment to tell her you feelings.
Have you been in competitions? Himig handog? Philpop? Or any other? Any prizes?
Not any serious ones actually. But we’ve won a Christian band competition before and won first prize through God’s grace. I’ m actually not the type who is fond of competitions. I just love sharing my music to people.
Do you perform in public? Describe those occasions? Concerts, radio, TV guestings?
I’ve done several solo and band gigs since 2014. Recently, I’ve been doing solo acoustics in different indie productions. I will be featured in Pinas FM 95.5 at DJ Marky Marks segment through the help of sir Bong Cervantes of Bongskie Prods.
How do you handle mistakes during a performance?
No one is a perfect musician. We all make mistakes from time to time. I deal with it by just shrugging it of as if nothing happened. The show must go on, so they say.
Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?
I always say this: Being anxious before a performance is normal. I think it happens to everyone, even if they don’t admit it. What’s important is you still manage to pull yourself together during the show.
What’s you other job or music job you are offering?
I’m a licensed Physical Therapist by profession. I am also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. I’m actually and artist lost in a medical field. But I think it’s okay as long as I keep on helping people.
What advice would you give to beginners or to those who wish to follow you music goals? To fellow indie artists?
Proverbs 3:6 -Living Bible (TLB)- “In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.” That is just basically it.
How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends, children, job?
It is really just time management. If music is your passion, you will find a way to balance it with your family and other professions.

WAYNE SCHWARTZ
What’s your full name and your stage name?

When did you know you are inclined to music?
I knew I was inclined to music when I was three years old.
When did you start playing? Which instruments do you play? What was the first tune(s) you learned?
I started playing guitar at age 14 because my dad encouraged me to play. I came from a musical family that liked to sing and play guitar, violin, piano, mandolin, drums, bass, etc. I play the guitar and bass but I can also play the mandolin, drums, and a little keyboard.
Describe your first instrument. Other instruments.
My main instrument is guitar of which I have been playing for 31 years.
Who helped you achieve learning your instrument of interest or who is your vocal coach? Who was your first teacher? Other teachers?
Well my dad was my biggest coach but I never had any lessons or anyone to motivate me to play and pursue the guitar seriously. I am all self-taught on the guitar.
Is your family musical?
Yes my family is musical on both sides. My dad's side sings and plays some instruments and my mom's side can play some banjo and guitar.
Describe your family member's musical interests and abilities.
My daughter plays guitar and my son dabbles with the drums a little bit and can play some guitar.
Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?
There are many but I admire Joe Satriani the most. He is my main influence since my high school days when I found out from a classmate his album Surfing With the Alien. I have followed Joe for his whole career and he continues to be a main influence in my own playing. I also admire many other guitar players such as Steve Vai, Phil Keaggy, Vinnie Moore, John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Gary Hoey, Blues Saraceno, Marty Friedman, Ty Tabor, Nuno Bettencourt, Eddie Van Halen, Guthrie Govan, Andy Timmons, Dave Weiner, Rob Balducci, Mick Jones, Paul Dean, Stu Hamm, and many others.
Which famous musicians have you learned from?
I have learned the most from Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.
What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?
My fondest musical memories are of listening to cassette tapes in my mom's Z28. I used to listen to Foreigner 4, Boston, and Van Halen a lot. I also remember listening to a lot of rock in roll in the house because my mom was a diehard rocker. I listened from everything from Bob Seger to AC/DC. It was always fun in school as well. I have a lot of fond memories of singing songs in our music class like Olivia Newton John's song Physical and Joan Jett's I love rock and roll. I also remember trying to start a band in middle school. I also was surrounded with Gospel music and hymns in church which was really cool as well. I had a very well-rounded musical palette. My dad always had the oldies playing like the Beach Boys and the Beatles, Del Shannon, The Temptations, The Ventures, and many others. He was a barber so it was fun sitting in his shop listening to tunes. I would always dream of playing guitar on my own.
Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones?
Yes I was influenced by many bands both modern and old growing up such as Foreigner, Boston, Van Halen, Loverboy, The Outfield, Bob Seger, Extreme, Nazareth, AC/DC, Cat Stevens, Most 80's music, Beatles, Beach Boys, The Ventures, Dick Dale, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Jeff Beck, you name it, I listened to it. I was also influenced a lot by Christian rock by a friend since I didn't know much about it. Groups like Deliverance, Saint, Messiah Prophet, Rez Band, PFR, Phil Keaggy, Shout, Tourniquet, Bloodgood, Bride, Neon Cross, Barren Cross, Jeff Scheetz, Lovewar, Larry Norman, Whiteheart, Petra, Lanny Cordola, Stryper, and many others.
Who are your favorite musicians? Groups? CD's?
Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Vinnie Moore, Steve Morse, Dream Theater, Eddie Van Halen, Gary Hoey, Marty Friedman, Andy Timmons, Kings X, Extreme, Nuno Bettencourt, Tourniquet, Phil Keaggy, and other instrumental guitar players.
What was you first original composition? What was it all about, lyrical message/content?
My first original composition was called Cloudwalk and it was an instrumental about walking on the clouds in heaven.
Have you been in competitions? Himig handog? Philpop? Or any other? Any prizes?
No, I have not really been in any competitions or won any prizes but I have played guitar in the Philippines for churces and some local clubs in Quezon City. I also post a lot of videos of me playing guitar on YouTube especially covers and original music with some improvisation jams.
Do you perform in public? Describe those occasions? Concerts, radio, TV guestings?
Yes, I perform a lot here on Guam at open mic nights, some hotels, festivals, at my school and work, in church, and coffee shops on Guam. Most of the time it is for music festivals here on the island of Guam or for special events. I even performed at some funerals because people love moving instrumental music. I even did the national anthem while a guy jumped out of a parachute during Guam's Liberation Day celebration in 2013. I have also performed live with my church as an outreach ministry and even at a nursing home to bring some joy to people that can't get out. I am heavily involved with music ministry in my church with praise and worship and teaching youth music.
How do you handle mistakes during a performance?
I smile and keep playing and try to nail the next note or song. You gotta let the crowd know that just because you made a mistake, you are still having fun playing your music. Everyone will make a mistake now and again especially if your music is difficult to play like mine is. You just have to shake it off and keep going. The show must go on!
Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?
I used to but I don't anymore. I did get nervous when I played the national anthem in front of like 10000 people here on Guam! I suppose if I played in front of thousands, I would get nervous but I am sure I could handle it. I have been playing live for quite a few years now.
What’s you other job or music job you are offering?
I am a school math and science teacher at a high school here on Guam and I teach guitar as well.
What advice would you give to beginners or to those who wish to follow you music goals? To fellow indie artists?
Practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more! Set goals such as how good you want to get on the instrument you are playing. Learn from others and play with people that are better than you so you grow. Play out as much as you can because you have to have it together when you are playing live. You need to be disciplined and never give up on your musical dreams and goals. Finally you have to get away from playing covers eventually and write your own original material to share to the world. There are many ways you can do that now through soundcloud, facebook, and other internet sources so that people can hear your music. I would also recommend learning how to record and release your own material as I have done. I have released two albums now. One was recorded in the Philippines and released last year called Beyond The Seen and I just finished my second album that will be released on July 29 worldwide. You can get both albums on iTunes, Amazon, or stream them on Spotify.
How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends, children, job?
Well I just pray to the Lord to help me with my priorities. God is my number one priority then family, then work and music. You have to get your priorities right and things will work out. I don't have to practice as much as I used to when I was first starting out. What took eight hours before on guitar only takes me about 15 minutes of practice now. I really like focusing on composing and not so much practicing like I used to. I like to improvise over jam tracks to get ideas or watch a new player on the internet or look at Guitar World or Guitar Player magazine to get new licks and riff ideas. I usually play mostly on the weekends since I have off and prioritize my kids and family during the week.
